The Building clock tower was in need of some beam testing, to ensure that it was structurally safe and verify its safe to carry the expected load weight.
The Grade I listed Rochdale Town Hall is one of the most well-known historic buildings in the north of England. The Town Hall functions as the ceremonial headquarters of Rochdale Metropolitan Borough Council and houses local government departments, including the borough’s civil registration office.
Within the tower of the Town hall, the borough council required a beam load test, so they knew the weight of equipment that could be lifted into the tower. By placing too much weight onto the beam the council faced the risk of compromising the integrity of the beam and therefore the structure of the building. It was imperative One Stop Lifting Services team gave a definitive answer as to how much weight could be placed upon the beam whilst maintaining structural safety within the building.
Our client found us through account manager Alan Taylor who had dealt with them in the past and in a brief conversation found that they had a requirement for the test and began work to find out the best approach to service their requirements.
The client chose One Stop Hire and One Stop Lifting Services because we had the capability to offer a complete service, from start to finish whilst also supplying the qualified professionals to carry out the services. 2 LEEA qualified personnel, along with equipment to complete testing, examination and certification following completion of works. Along with access to the beams and fixings, we performed a function test, a load test to the worst scenario, deflection readings and a safe working load test.
The Beam was tested to 625kg to allow a Safe Working Load of 500kg. By completing the load test One Stop Hire have created an opportunity for increased effectiveness and efficiency for future work carried out where loads need to be lifted. After the initial requirement was for a limit almost half of the completed result. The certification is valid for 12 months. After which another test will need to be carried out to ensure the safety of the beam in question.
