We are delighted to announce that our Non-Executive Chairman, and Dannielle’s father – Martin Ainscough has been formally appointed High Sheriff of Greater Manchester for 2025/26.
The Historic Role of a High Sheriff
The office of High Sheriff is one of the oldest secular titles in England, dating back over a thousand years to a time before the establishment of Parliament.
Originally, High Sheriffs were the King’s principal representatives in each county, responsible for the collection of taxes, maintenance of law and order, and the administration of justice.
Over time, as governance evolved and Parliament was established, the role became largely ceremonial. (Indeed, the legend of Robin Hood draws on tales of corruption among early High Sheriffs, such as that of Nottingham).
Modern Day Duties of a High Sheriff
Today, the High Sheriff serves as a figurehead, recognising and supporting the work of individuals and organisations who strive to improve their communities.
Martin’s appointment is a fitting recognition of his outstanding service over many years, particularly through his extensive charitable contributions and support following the sale of Ainscough Crane Hire in 2007. His commitment to helping others, both physically and financially, has touched countless lives.
Throughout his year of office, Martin will represent the Crown in Greater Manchester, attending hundreds of events to celebrate charitable endeavours, honour military service, and recognise good deeds across all sectors of the community. It is a voluntary, unpaid position, with High Sheriffs personally funding their activities, and Martin is planning a number of charitable initiatives during his tenure to further benefit local causes.
